How to create a WordPress website for free – Step by step guide

In this age of advanced technology, our world is shifting more and more to the Internet. Whether we need a recipe, a translation, guides, how-to’s or shopping, we turn to the Internet as the primary source. I would like to commend you for taking the time to research how to create a wordpress website for free, because it means that you are seeing that there is much to gain to have a piece of online legacy.

About WordPress

WordPress is one of the leading website building platforms. You have the ability to design any kind of website, including but not limited to blogs, e-commerce and services / business websites. Because WordPress is so easy to use, more than 27% of the Internet’s websites use it as a website builder.

The great fact about WordPress is that you have many free features that you can use to create your own brand online, no matter what kind of website you want to build. You get access to 2600 themes and over 31K plug-ins to customize the look of your website, so you can rest assured that you will find everything you need to make your success.

It is also very search-engine friendly, meaning that WordPress makes it easier for you to be more accessible to people on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing, when they are looking for what you have to offer.

With WordPress, you don’t need to know any kind of coding like HTML and CSS. There is still a bit of a learning curve, but the concept of how to build a website on this platform is fairly easy to grasp. As a result, maintaining your website is very easy to do.

Unlike other website builders, like Wix and Weebly, the website you build on WordPress is able to grow with you, at no extra cost to you.

Where to begin

Before starting to build a website, you should do your research on web hosting.

Web hosting is the service offered by a company that will allow your website to become live on the internet, and as such, make it easy for your visitors to access it. All the information that you want showed on your website will be stored on that company’s server. Each time a visitor visits your website, the information is requested from the servers of your web hosting company and shown to them.

There are plenty of good companies you can choose from namely Hostgator, BlueHost, GoDaddy and iPage, but you need to be aware that they do charge a small monthly fee to host your website.

If you would like to host your website COMPLETELY free, then you may want to try WordPress.com directly. I do need to mention though, that although it is free and has some training, that it is still NOT the best place to host your website and it is NOT the best place to learn how to build your website properly.

If you are looking for step-by-step training on how to build up a WordPress website for FREE as well as get FREE HOSTING, I would suggest that you take a look at SiteRubix, my personal favorite website-building platform that will provide you with ALL information that you need, step-by-step.

Website domain name

Now that you have decided where to host your website, you will need to find a fitting domain name. A domain name can be thought as being the “address” of your website.

For example, if you go to Google Maps and put in your home address, it will show you your house. Similarly, you put in a domain name such as “google.com”, it will bring you to where “Google” is on the net.

When choosing a name for your free website, be aware that if you choose a FREE domain, that your website will look something

like this; “yourdomain.wordpress.com” OR “yourdomain.siterubix.com”. It is only if you decide to buy a domain that you can make your website look like this; “yourdomain.com”.

The difference between the two has a direct correlation to how serious you are about the website and how big you want the website to be. A purchased domain name has so much more potential to be seen on Google compared to a .wordpress.com or .siterubix.com domain.

A purchased domain shows Google and the search engines that you are serious about your website. Think of buying a domain like buying a lot for a home and hosting a FREE domain, as renting it. When you buy the lot for the house, everything is within your control. But when you rent it, the landlord still has authority over it.

Select your theme and plugins

As I mentioned before, there are a lot of themes (more than 2600 of them) for you to choose from and because there is such a big selection, you are able to easily create your own look and customize how you want your website to appear. Your website becomes more brandable  and unique.

It can be hard to choose a theme because, although the main function of the theme is for the “visual” esthetics, the individual themes’ codes also play a big role in the functionality, navigation, speed and ease-of-use of your website. Therefore, it can take some time for you to find a theme that will both appear visually appealing to you and that will deliver its uses.

Additionally, you can choose between the 31000+ plugins to make your website more functional based on what the purpose of the website. There are specific plugins that will support social media sharing, some are more for blogs, some others are for e-commerce websites and some others will enhance the SEO (search engine optimization) of your website.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO is all about making your website, or for a blog it will be a particular page, come as close as possible to the first position, on the first page of a search engine. Because, we all agree that the websites or pages on the first page of Google, Yahoo and Bing always have the highest number of traffic.

If there is traffic, there will be more sales.

So how do you go about setting up your website for best SEO? CLICK HERE to be redirected to a video that will show you just how to do this.

The next step after preparing your website, will be to use specific KEYWORDS to achieve a higher chance of making it to the first page. The best keyword research tool that I personally use is called Jaaxy and you can read my review of Jaaxy here.

My point with keywords, is that you have to research the ones that are being searched highly in the search engines but that do not have a lot of competition. That will allow you to target a specific audience looking for the information that you have to offer on your website or page.

It will, in other words, make it easier for visitors to find your website and the information that you have to give them.

What will be your main way of earning money?

Let’s face it; we are all looking to make some extra income, even if it is as little as $100 a month.

If your website is an e-commerce website, then it is pretty straight-forward how you will gain from it. If your website will be more of one that will be geared towards a service(s) that you have to offer, then you are set on how your money will be earned.

If you have a blog, then let me tell you that you will mainly have 2 ways to earn money.

1) Google Adsense

Google Adsense is owned, of course, by Google and will pay you to display Ads on your website. Every time a visitor clicks on an Ad, you get paid.

However, be advised that it takes a lot of clicks to make descent income with Google Adsense alone. Pay per click on the Ads can vary from a few cents to several dollars, but does not generally go over $2 per click. And that too, it is estimated that the percentage of visitors that click on Ads is between 2% and 40%.

These numbers depend greatly on the niche of your website and where you place the Ads on your website to optimize clicks.

2) Affiliate Marketing
This is how I personally make money on the Internet. Affiliate marketing is more targeted and has a greater percentage of people actually buying. It works by you making a recommendation / writing a review about the product in questions.

CLICK HERE to learn more about how to write a product review.

My personal definition of affiliate marketing is the following; to promote a product by writing a review on it. Whoever looks for the review of this particular product, if they like what I had to say about it, will go ahead and purchase it through my unique

link and I receive a commission as a result.

Nowadays, there are a lot of vendors online with affiliate programs, from make-up companies, to toy companies, to baby stuff, to outdoor gear. Even if you can’t find an affiliate program for a specific product, you can always apply to become an affiliate with eBay and/or Amazon.

It suffices to only write a review about what you like and/or don’t like about the item based on the facts. If you end up writing a positive review, then for sure you can provide a link (an affiliate link to be precise) to the product where they can buy it and you make a commission.

Even if you write a negative review and do not recommend the product, you can still make money by diverting your readers to the review of the product you DO recommend, so you are making the most of your website.

I want to share with you…

… the place online where I have had my training, where I was taught from A to Z, step by step, about how to make it big online through affiliate marketing. It is called Wealthy Affiliate.

That’s all folks!

This marks the end of my article on how to create a WordPress website for free. The next step here, is really to keep doing what you do (writing rich and helpful articles and meaningful item descriptions) for the SEO of your website. With time, you will start seeing results.

If I have missed anything or if you have questions at all, please feel free to let me know in the comments section below. In addition to that, I would really like to know how you monetize your websites and what kinds of websites you own.

Cheers,

Reyhana
